OUR PROJECTS
Adopt a Village and Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
This is a program where S.U.N. Ltd. works with churches and other charitable institutions to place solar cookers into village households. These are households that mainly survive on subsistence farming which provides the family with barely enough food and very little disposable income. In addition, the women and children are also walking vast distances each day to gather firewood. After the wood has been gathered, water also has to be fetched! Then the cooking has to be done and it is done over an open fire which exposes the mother and the child on her back to enormous amounts of smoke which is being inhaled by both of them. Perhaps this explains why respiratory ailments are so prevalent among this group.
S.U.N. Ltd. has a very selective screening process for the Adopt a Village program. It begins with meeting the Area Chief for input on village selection. After a short list has been developed, we approach the Village Chief.
If the Chief is receptive to the idea we start with his family and will spend up to three days of training on all aspects of solar cooking. The rest of the village is then introduced to the cooker and is taught its benefits, care, and use, with proper care the oven will last for about 20 years! Our representatives visit or remain on sight until they feel that the project has taken hold.
We have found that by getting buy-in from the village leaders is very important to the overall success of the project. We do occasional follow-ups to ascertain that all is going well and to handle any questions or issues that have surfaced during our absence.
We also take photographs and have letters of appreciation written to the donors by a representative of the recipients.
